Cracking the Code to a Happy, Well-Behaved Pup
Ever wondered why your dog jumps up to greet people, why it’s worse with kids and visitors than with you, and what you can do about it? Over 20 years ago, I began exploring questions like these, and it soon became my profession to help dog owners overcome everyday challenges and create happier, more harmonious homes.
Dogs have always fascinated me, and the more I learn about them, the deeper my connection grows. My experience comes from a variety of paths. While studying with the National Dog Trainers Federation to become a certified trainer, I recognised the value of working with a wide range of breeds. To gain hands-on experience, I worked at a doggie daycare and groomed dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Through providing holiday pet care and fostering rescue dogs, I’ve learned how to navigate the challenges of living with dogs of every breed, age, and temperament. These experiences have been invaluable in helping me truly connect with my clients’ situations—whether it’s a Husky that howls all night, a Spoodle with separation anxiety, or a Beagle that bolts at the dog park.
As Vice President of the AAPDT, I’m passionate about encouraging professional dog trainers across Australia to keep learning and growing. Together, we continuously refine our skills to raise the standard of training nationwide. During the 2020 lockdown, I discovered the power of recorded demonstrations, which allowed my clients to practice at home at their own pace. This realisation led to a full-scale production of training videos and presenting puppy training segments for Bondi Vet D-TV.
I love sharing these insights and uncovering the mysteries of a dog’s mind. While I still work with adult dogs through one-on-one consultations, my main focus in recent years has been on puppies. When a puppy first joins your home, you become the biggest influence on the character they will grow up to be. That’s why I’m passionate about helping you guide them onto the right path, preventing stressful problem behaviors before they even start. My goal is to help you and your pup build a life together that is easy, joyful, and full of connection.
Mindful Training
I’ve always believed that dog training should work for both you and your dog. That’s why I design strategies and solutions that are practical and easy to integrate into your day-to-day routine—making life simpler, not more complicated.
I use modern training concepts and methods, always setting your dog up for success by encouragement, and plenty of opportunities to learn. Central to this is the principle of Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA)—a humane, effective approach that emphasises using the least intrusive methods possible to create positive behavior changes.
My training style focuses on fostering positive experiences while maintaining your ability to set firm boundaries. This approach fosters a strong bond between you and your dog, encouraging them to be eager to please through respect and trust.
